Gay doctor in Austria fired for arranging illegal surrogacy

The senior doctor - who is also a professor - works at Vienna's general hospital, the AKH, and was reportedly desperate for a child of his own after caring for so many women going through pregnancies.

But being in a relationship with another male doctor who is also a gynaecologist it was a wish that was unlikely to be fulfilled.

After the pair decided that they had to do something to have a child of their own, they persuaded the female fellow doctor to help them out.
A few weeks after the baby was born, hospital bosses discovered what had happened and fire the senior doctor, who is reportedly the biological father of the child.

After he appealed and had his case heard by a disciplinary committee, his dismissal was overturned and the suspension was reportedly lifted, although the doctor has not yet returned to work.

Under Austrian law, it has been illegal for a woman to offer to be a surrogate mother since 1992. Punishment for those who break the law can be up to €50,000.
It is not clear if a further investigation will be carried out by authorities.
