Dutchman on ski holiday nabbed for smuggling meat

The man was caught on Sunday after driving from Germany into the canton of Aargau at Rheinfelden, the border guard service said in a news release.

Bags of roast pork, spare ribs, steak and sausages were found in bags hidden in the man’s car.

The meat was packed in a dozen bags placed behind baggage in the trunk, in a spare wheel well and in front of the rear passenger seats.

The Dutchman told border guards that he was planning to go skiing in Switzerland and that he was bringing the meat for friends.

Meat brought into the country in large quantities is subject to duties.

It is generally significantly more expensive than in neighbouring European countries.

The man was ordered to pay taxes and a fine of “several thousand francs”, border guards said.
