Racist attacks ratchet up tension in Cologne

A mob of men attacked a group of Pakistanis in the Cologne city centre on Sunday evening. A few minutes later a Syrian was also attacked in what appear to be racially motivated attacks.

The group of around 20 men assaulted six Pakistanis in the early evening. Two of the Pakistanis sustained serious injuries and had to be brought to hospital, police report.

In the same area of Cologne a middle-aged Syrian man was attacked around 20 minutes later by a group of five men. The Syrian man was injured but did not need to be brought to hospital.

In both cases police are investigating grievous bodily harm.

Express newspaper reports that a group of hooligans and bikers had arranged on Facebook to go on a “manhunt” in the Cologne city centre and “clear the place out”.

Police had already built up their presence in the centre of the Rhineland town earlier in the day after “receiving indication that certain groups would seek to provoke the situation”.

The attacks come after a series of sexual assaults in the Cologne city centre over New Year which witnesses said were carried out by men who were of north African or Arab appearance.

The crimes which were repeated in other major German cities have led to an increase in racial tension as many people have blamed the attacks on Germany’s open-door refugee policy, which has seen over a million people seek asylum in the Bundesrepublik over the past 12 months.

Over the weekend violence also broke out at a rally held by the far right Pegida protest movement which was held in the Cologne city centre. Police on Saturday fired tear gas and used water cannon to clear the rally after protesters hurled firecrackers and bottles at officers.
