Spain arrests jihadi suspects

Spain's Interior Ministry says two people have been arrested in Catalonia and the Canary Islands on suspicion of forming part of the Islamic State group and of recruiting and indoctrinating Islamic militants.

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said the two, a man and a woman both of Moroccan nationality, worked within “a highly professional'' network aimed at conveying “an idealized image of their struggle'' in order to recruit impressionable young Spaniards and train them in the use of arms and explosives.

Fernandez Diaz said the suspects _ arrested today in northeastern Mataro and on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura _ were “in constant contact with the Islamic State hierarchy in Syria'' and both had made a public oath of loyalty to IS and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.—AP

Six migrant children drown off Turkey’s coast

Turkey's state-run news agency says six children have drowned after a rubber dinghy carrying Afghan migrants to Greece sank off Turkey's Aegean coast.
The Anadolu Agency said the coast guard rescued five migrants from the sea and were still looking for two others reported missing.
The bodies of the children were recovered. Anadolu didn't report their ages, but said one of them was a baby.
The migrants were apparently hoping to make it to the island of Khios from the resort of Cesme despite bad weather.
Turkey has stepped up efforts to stop migrants from leaving to Greece by sea. Last week, authorities rounded up around 3,000 migrants in the town of Ayvacik, north of Cesme, who were believed to be waiting to make the journey to the Greek island of Lesbos.—AP
