Arundhati Roy, Kundan Shah and 22 others return their awards to protest against the rising 'intolerance' in the country


In a move to strengthen the ongoing Award Wapsi campaign, 24 filmmakers have returned their awards to protest against the growing intolerance. 


 Filmmaker Kundan Shah has announced that he will return the National Award that he had received for the cult film, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. Filmmaker, Saeed Mirza, has also said that he will return his national award. Over 40 writers and artistes and 10 filmmakers have returned top awards to record their protest against what they call the threat to diversity and freedom of speech.

 Others who have returned their awards are Arundhati Roy, Virendra Saini, Ajay Raina, Ranjan Palit, Manoj Lobo, Tapan Bose, Sanjay Kak, Madhusree Dutta, Pradip Krishen, Shripraksh, Vivek Sachidanand, PM Satheesh, Tarun Bharitiya, Amitabha Chakravarty, Rafeeq Ellias, Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti, Anwar Jamal, Sudheer Palsane, Ajay Raina, Manoj Nitharwal, Irene Dhar Malik and Satya Raj Nagpaul.

 In a dramatic development, 10 prominent filmmakers had earlier returned various awards and honours they had received, protesting impediments to freedom of speech and expression and showing solidarity with the agitating FTII students.

 The filmmakers who had returned their awards in the press conference held earlier include the likes of Anand Patwardhan, Dipankar Banerjee, Paresh Kamdar, Nishtha Jain, Kirti Nakhwa, Harshavardhan Kulkarni, Hari Nair, Rakesh Sharma, Indraneel Lahiri and Lipika Singh Darai.
