Pahlwan committed suicide to blew himself off with the hand grenade, police say

Karachi: A suspected militant blew himself up and injured two policemen early on Sunday when officers surrounded his hideout in the eastern part of Karachi, officials said.

Police, with the assistance of intelligence agencies, raided the suspected militant hideout in Rafahe Aam Society, near Karachi International Airport, at around 3am.

A shoot-out ensued between police and the militant. The suspect used a hand-propelled grenade that injured at least two policemen, one critically.

However, the siege was so tight that Farhan alias Pahlwan, the suspected militant hiding inside, could not flee.

The militant the committed suicide by blowing himself up with a hand grenade.

Police officer Rao Anwar told journalists that the militant’s formal affiliation was not known but he was involved in targeting and killing high profile personalities and the security forces.

Police recovered a pistol at the scene and have sent it for forensic tests to determine if it was used to perpetrate any crimes.

In yet another violent incident, unknown motorcycle riders opened fire on a vehicle belonging to Samaa TV channel.

They smashed the van’s rear glass screen but failed to injure any one inside.

The driver of the van told police he was passing through the Liaqatabad neighbourhood when he noticed the suspects riding on a motorcycle and tried to speed away.

However, they gave chase and shot the van from behind.

The incident alarmed the journalist fraternity in this volatile city as it was the third such incident in as many days.

Last week, unknown killers targeted and shot down Aftab Alam, a journalist associated with Geo TV as well as Samaa TV. A day before the journalist was killed, a Geo TV van was attacked in Bahadarabad neighbourhood. A technician was killed and the van driver was wounded in that incident.

The journalists’ union said protest rallies would be held on Monday to condemn the recent attacks and the government’s laxity over the frequent assaults on the media and journalists. Journalists say the attacks are brazen attempts to curtail the freedom of press and speech.
