PM's remarks at the Release of the Book – "Education of Muslims"

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today described "knowledge" ("ilm") as the focal point of all religions. Addressing an eminent gathering of scholars, historians and diplomatic representatives at the release function of the book, "Education of Muslims: An Islamic Perspective of Knowledge and Education – Indian Context", the Prime Minister said education can become the strength of the entire SAARC region. He said if the region does not embrace modernity, it will get left behind, as the rest of the world progresses.


The Prime Minister said it is the good fortune of people living in India, that we have the opportunity to follow, understand and learn so many different religions, and strands of thought, at one place.

He said today, India is free of the disease of polio, and India is ready to assume responsibility for eradicating it from the entire SAARC region. In this context, the Prime Minister also spoke about India's SAARC satellite, which will work for the benefit of the entire SAARC region.

The Prime Minister said the book can help us in our efforts towards "understanding each other" – understanding different points of view. He complimented the book's editor, Shri J.S. Rajput. The Prime Minister also complimented Shri Sirajuddin Qureshi, who has written the foreword for the book.

Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, calls on PM

Mr. Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China called on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today.

The Prime Minister warmly recalled their meeting in Beijing on 15 May 2015 during his visit to China, and welcomed Mr. Zhang Dejiang and his delegation to India.

The Prime Minister said that parliamentary exchanges are an important pillar of the bilateral relationship. He stressed on the need to broaden the foundation of India China relations by promoting exchanges between State-level legislatures as well.

The Prime Minister recalled his extremely productive visit to China last month, and said that the outcomes of the visit will take the India China relationship to a new level.

Mr. Zhang Dejiang said that there is a new level of interest about India in China across all sectors, including among the businesses, due to Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China and his leadership in India. He endorsed the view expressed by Prime Minister Modi in China that whether 21st Century is Asian Century will depend on what India and China achieve individually and jointly.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of peaceful, stable and cooperative relations between India and China for regional and global peace and prosperity.

The Prime Minister and Mr. Zhang Dejiang emphasized the importance of promoting investment, trade, tourism and people to people ties, and enhancing strategic communication and coordination.

Prime Minister Modi and Mr. Zhang Dejiang welcomed the renewed focus on India and China’s ancient cultural and spiritual ties, highlighted by Prime Minister and President Xi’s joint visit to Xian and the joint Yoga Tai-Chi demonstration witnessed in Beijing by Prime Minister and Premier Li.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the increase in the number of Chinese visitors to India since the launch of “Visit India Year” in China earlier this year.

PM reviews progress of tribal welfare programmes

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today called for enhanced convergence among various schemes aimed at welfare of tribal communities across the country. Chairing a high-level review meeting on tribal welfare initiatives including Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana, the Prime Minister stressed on improving the outcomes of various interventions for tribal welfare. The Prime Minister said various wings of the Government of India, and the States, should work in coordination to meet the targeted objectives within specified timeframes.

The Prime Minister enquired about the progress in mapping of sickle cell anaemia among the tribal population. He also sought to know the impact of the Jan Dhan Yojana and recently launched social security schemes, on the tribal communities. He reiterated his earlier suggestion about exploring the possibility of a Tribal Cultural Troupe Carnival.

Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, and senior officials were present on the occasion.
