The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee extended greetings and good wishes to all the workers of India on the occasion of May Day.


In his message the President has said, “On the occasion of May Day, I extend my heartiest greetings and good wishes to all the workers of India.

May Day, also known as ‘Labour Day’ or ‘International Workers’ Day’, is an occasion when we pay tribute to the contribution that workers have made to progress, prosperity and well- being of our society. The increasing production and higher standards of living that our economy has witnessed would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of our vital labour force. Let us, on this day recognize and celebrate the enormous role our working force is playing in enabling our nation attain rapid socio-economic progress”.

Sowing Area under Rabi/Summer Rice and Summer Crops

The area under rabi/summer rice as on today stands at 40.66 as compared to 44.88 lakh hectare in previous year .Total area under rabi rice and summer crops stands at 64.20 lakh hectare as compared to 66.23 lakh hectare in previous year. Summer pulses have increase in sowing area to 7.56 lakh hectare from 5.68 lakh hectare last year. Similarly, sowing area of summer maize and summer coarse cereals have respectively increased to 2.74 lakh hectare and 6.32 lakh hectare compared to 1.97 lakh hectare and 5.60 lakh hectare in previous year.

It is reported that 2.03 lakh hectare area has been covered under summer pulses in Bihar followed by Uttar Pradesh (2.04 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (1.69 lakh ha) Gujarat (0.51 lakh ha) Andhra Pradesh (0.44 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.39 lakh ha), Assam(0.17 lakh ha) Karnataka (0.15 lakh ha), and Telangana (0.13 lakh ha). Sowing of summer oilseeds has been reported from the state of West Bengal (2.82 lakh ha), Karnataka (2.19 lakh ha), Odisha (1.31 lakh ha), Gujarat (1.24 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.79 lakh ha),Maharashtra (0.51 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.34 lakh ha), Chhatisgarh (0.25 lakh ha), and Telangana (0.21 lakh ha).

US Ambassador, Mr. Richard Verma Calls on Union Agriculture Minister

The newly appointed US Ambassador, Mr. Richard Verma today called on Union Agriculture Minister Shri Radha Mohan Singh. Agriculture Minister mentioned about the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister to US and US President’s visit to India which have added more vigour to already warm relations enjoyed by two countries. Issues of mutual cooperation and also cooperation for ensuring World Food Security were discussed. Special emphasis was laid for transforming the structure of the cooperation vis-à-vis the current scenario requiring necessary changes as enshrined in the cooperation agreement signed in 2010 in the agriculture & allied sectors.

It was agreed to give renewed focus on cooperation in agriculture between both countries and initiate immediate steps for renewing the MoU signed in 2010 at the earliest possible with inclusion of new areas in the light of changing requirements and circumstances. It was also decided to amicably resolve sanitary and phytosanitary issues between the two countries for enhanced bilateral trade.

US Ambassador put on record his appreciation of the work done by government of India & USAID for the Agriculture Food Security Programme. Agriculture Minister expressed interest in the technology used by USA for weather forecasting for improving preparedness as well as redressal of problems caused by natural calamities.
