Mega Food Park Inaugurated at Nalbari, Assam

To give a major boost to the food processing sector by adding value and reducing food wastage and loss at each stage of the supply chain with particular focus on perishables, Ministry of Food Processing Industries is implementing a Mega Food Park Scheme in the country since 2008. Financial assistance uptoRs. 50.00 Crore is provided for setting up Mega Food Parks for creation of modern infrastructure facilities for food processing along the value chain from farm to consumer. A Mega Food Park is set up in an area of a minimum of 50 acres. Common facilities and enabling infrastructure is created at Central Processing Centre and Infrastructure for primary processing and storage is created near the farm in the form of Primary Processing Centres (PPCs) and Collection Centres (CCs).



Ministry of Food Processing Industries had sanctioned a Mega Food Park to M/s North East Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd. at Nalbari, Assam. The Central Processing Centre of the Park at Tihu in Nalbari District of Assam has been completed and was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister, Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal today on 28th May 2015.Minister of State for Home Mr. Kiren Rijiju was also present to grace the occasion.

North East Mega Food Park has been set up in 50 acre of land at the cost of Rs. 76 crore.This project is having facilities of fully operational industrial sheds for SMEs, developed industrial plots for lease to food processing units, Dry Warehouse of 10000 MT, Cold Storages of 3000 MT, Common Effluent Treatment plant, Quality Control Labs etc. The Park also has a common administrative building for office and other uses by the entrepreneurs. 6 PPCs are also proposed to be set up at Nagaon, Badarpur, Tinsukia, Barapani, Krishnai and Kajalgaon which will provide facilities for primary processing and storage near the farms.

  Speaking on the occasion, Smt Badal said that the Mega Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 30-35 food processing units in the Park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually. The Park will also provide direct and indirect employment to 6000 people and benefit about 25000-30000 farmers in the CPC and PPC catchment areas.

Smt. Badal said that the modern infrastructure for food processing created at North East Mega Food Park will benefit the farmers, growers, processors and consumers of Assam and adjoining areas immensely and prove to be a big boost to the growth of the food processing sector in the State of Assam.

Minister of State for Home Mr. Kiren Rijiju said that the Mega Food Park shall go a long way in helping the farmers of the North East. He said that the NE Region has great potential for Food Processing and the Government has taken many steps to promote the Food Processing sector as well as Organic Farming in the region.

Secretary I&B, Shri Bimal Julka meets US-India Business Council

Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Shri Bimal Julka today met the delegation of US-India Business Council led by Mr Joe Welch, Senior Vice President, 21st Century Fox. The discussions focussed on Media & Entertainment sector in India and the steps being taken by the government to promote “Make-in-India” across the different platforms in different sectors.

Shri Julka, gave an overview of the growth of the industry in critical areas of the Media & Entertainment sector. He emphasized on the government’s efforts to make India a “Film shooting Destination” and efforts to setup a Film Facilitation Unit was under consideration to promote the concept of Single Window Clearance. He also apprised the delegation about the government’s commitment to facilitate the Digitization process Phase III & Phase IV as per the given timelines. The discussions also focussed on the possible collaborative avenues related to anti piracy.

During the discussions the delegation was also apprised regarding the new policy initiatives of the Ministry in the Broadcasting & Film Sector. Shri Julka emphasized on the role of the I&B ministry in disseminating the schemes of Government across media platforms in an effort to sensitise the masses. The meeting was attended by senior officers of the I&B ministry and members of the council representing different segments of the Media & Entertainment industry in USA.

Shri Arun Jaitley meets Farmers’ delegation on Land Bill

Shri Arun Jaitley, Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and I&B today met a farmers’ delegation representing different stakeholders and organisations from across the country. The delegation was led by Shri Naresh Sirohi.

The representatives from different organisations gave their views on the Land Bill to Shri Jaitley. The Minister assured the delegation that their suggestions would be looked into suitably and that their interests would not be ignored. He also asked the leader of the delegation, Shri Naresh Sirohi to look into the issues and suggestions made by the representatives on matters related to the Land Bill and submit a report to him.

Shri Nitin Gadkari Launches e-Books

 “The road transport and shipping sectors would contribute 2% and even more to GDP growth of the country in two years”, said Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping while launching the e-books of his ministries here today on completion of one year of NDA Government.  Moreover, these sectors would generate nearly 25 lakh new jobs in the coming year, he added.

Underscoring the achievements of Ministry of Road Transport in the last one year, the Minister informed that investors have agreed to work on PPP model for five projects. He said a number of IT- based e-governance initiatives such as e-following, e-pay, overweight cargo (OWC) and over dimensional cargo (ODC) approvals have been introduced. A platform for infrastructure and materials providers, INAM-PRO, linking the suppliers to the road contractors and users has been commissioned. It is a historical step towards delivering cement at economical price, the Minister said. Mentioning the target of 30 km per day of highway construction in two years, the Minister said that a leap of 400% has already been taken as the construction has gone up to 13 km per day from 3 km per day during the last leg of the previous government. The Minister also expressed the hope that the ‘Road Transport & Safety Bill 2014’ would be passed in the next session of the Parliament.

Shri Nitin Gadkari said that the Indian maritime sector is also poised to take a significant leap forword with new initiatives in ship-building, inland waterways, coastal shipping, capacity-addition and efficiency in port-operations. He further said that the Bill declaring 101 rivers of the country as National Waterways (NWs), after passage in Parliament, will pave the way for development of these waterways for cargo and passenger transportation. Work on preparation of DPRs for 16 NWs and feasibility study of 40 NWs has already commenced, he informed. He also mentioned about developing tourist centres at different islands in the country.

Dr Harsh Vardhan Addresses a Group of Physicians, Scientists and Medical Students at Mount Sinai Hospital in USA

The Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan addressed a group of physicians, scientists and medical students at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City in USA today. The title of talk was "Tail of two drops" -how to make changes in healthcare and impacting a lasting change in population, by eradicating a deadly disease such as polio for India.

This 45 minute talk was followed by a small celebration to honor Dr Harsh Vardhan's achievements in field of public health. Event was attended by senior faculty, professors and students of the hospital.

IITTM, Ministry of Tourism to start an MBA (Tourism) program in partnership with Indira Gandhi National Tribal University(IGNTU)

The Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India) will now be offering a full fledged MBA in Tourism in partnership with Indira Gandhi National Tribal University(IGNTU) , Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. AnMoUto this effect has been signed between IITTM andIGNTU, Amarkantak (M.P.). The Director of IITTM, Prof (Dr.) Sandeep Kulshreshtha and the Vice Chancellor ofIGNTU, Prof. T.V. Kattimani exchanged the signed documents of the MoUin the presence of the Minister of State for Culture (Independent Charge), Tourism (Independent Charge) and Civil Aviation and Chairman, BOG-IITTM, Dr. Mahesh Sharma in New Delhi today.

The IITTM will now start the MBA (Tourism) program in place of the earlier PGDM course in collaboration with theNational Tribal University which has a pan India presence.

Secretary, Tourism, Dr. Lalit Panwar and other senior officials of the Ministry were present on the occasion.

39 More Athletes Included in Top Scheme 
Based on the recommendations of the Identification committee of Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOP) of National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) chaired by Shri Anurag Thakur, MP, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has included 39 more athletes in the Scheme. These athletes will get assistance under the TOP Scheme for Rio Olympics and 2020 Olympics. Earlier, the Ministry had named 45 athletes in the Scheme. The Ministry has already given funds of about 1.35 Crores to 10 athletes so far under the Scheme. It has also organised mental training camp of archers under the TOP Scheme. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has established the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) with the objective of promotion of sports in general and specific sports disciplines and individual sports persons in particular for achieving excellence at the National and International level. Ministry has initiated the ‘Target Olympic Podium Scheme’ (“TOP Scheme”) under the NSDF.  The scheme envisages identification of athletes who are potential medal winners in Olympics and providing support to them for preparation for Olympics.
