Two Day National Technical Seminar on Railway Track Issues Concludes Need to Benchmark the Best Engineering Pracatices of India and Abroad: Suresh Prabhu 

Institution of Permanent Way Engineers /IPWE (India) have organised a two days National Technical Seminar at New Delhi on 29th& 30th January 2015. 

The Seminar has been organised to deliberate on issues of Maintenance and Rail & Weld Management, Increase of Speed on existing Indian Railway Routes, Metro System Design, Standards and Construction. 

Delivering Valedictory address at the conclusion of the two day seminar, Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu said that there is a need to benchmark the best engineering practices of India and abroad and then adapt them to suit Indian requirements. He said that one of the subjects of the seminar namely Rail Weld Management is very important and we have to work towards minimizing cases of rail fractures and weld fractures as far as possible to ensure safety in railway operation. He said that the seminar will come up with suggestions and we should find mechanisms to integrate them in day to day functioning. Referring to the excellent engineering marvel undertaken by Indian Railways in the past like Konkan Railways, Jammu and Kashmir railway project etc. the Railway Minister said skill upgradation should be a continuous process and effort should be made to lower the cost of projects. On this occasion Railway Minister Shri Suresh Prabhu released a booklet with the title “Norms for Divisional Permanent Way Training Institutes” published by Northern Railways. 

On the occasion, IPWE also arranged a Technical Exhibition participated by Industry involved in the field of Railways Technology. Yesterday, Seminar and Exhibition were inaugurated by Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha in the presence of Shri A.K. Mital, Chairman Railway Board, & Shri V.K. Gupta, Member Engineering Railway Board & President IPWE(I). Senior Railway Officers and delegates from all over Indian Railways, Trade & Industries attended the two days Seminar. Shri Manoj Sinha released the conference Souvenir and Technical Literature related to the Topics of the Seminar. He awarded the winner authors of the previous Seminar. 

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Manoj Sinha highlighted the need of introduction of faster intercity trains by upgradation of the speed on the existing track. While appreciating the efforts of the Railway Engineers in reducing the Rail / Weld failures and thereby improving the reliability and safety of Railway system, the Minister advised them to devise strategies to bring down the rail failures. Shri Sinha also highlighted the need of rail based urban transport system, which is a more efficient, and environment friendly, transportation system for intracity travel. 

The senior IPWE Member over the age of 80years, were also felicitated by Shri Manoj Sinha. 

IPWE organizes National Technical Seminar every year to have an effective exchange of knowledge and experience about the latest technological developments concerning Permanent Way (known as Railway Track in common parlance), Bridges and Structures. 


Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Exam, 2014 

            Union Public Service Commission will be conducting Personality Test/Interview for the Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination 2014 at Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi-110069 w.e.f. 9th February to 13th February, 2015.  The Commission has uploaded the e-Summon letter for Interview/Personality Test on its website (  The candidates are advised to download their e-Summon letter alongwith all its enclosures and take a printout thereof.  The candidates will have to produce the printout of their e-Summon letter at the allotted venue.  In case the photograph is not visible or available on the e-summon letter, candidates are advised to carry identical photographs for verification alongwith proof of identity such as Identity Card, Voter Identity Card, Driving License, Passport etc. to the venue of the Personality Test/Interview. No paper Summon Letter will be issued for this Personality Test/Interview by the Commission.

Suresh Prabhu Flags off Trains Remotely Through Telepresence Service of Railtel, A Railway’s PSU 

It was an inauguration with a twist when Hon’ble Minister for Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, flagged off four Express trains from Bengaluru yesterday remotely through Telepresence Service of RailTel, a PSU of Railways. All the four flag offs were done remotely from concourse area of Bangalore City Railway station itself. Hon’ble Minister flagged off the trains starting from Kamakya (Guwahati) in North East Frontier Railway, Patna in East Central Railway, Tata Nagar in South Eastern Railway and Bangalore in South Western Railway over the Tele presence (TP) service provided by RailTel, the ICT arm of Indian Railways. 

Telepresence offers a more engaging video conference with cutting edge technology, so that the parties involved feel the immersive presence of participants at different locations. The service is designed to improve collaboration, save executive time, reduce costs and carbon footprint with no capital investment and obsolescence risk says Shri A. Seshagiri Rao, Director, Network, Planning and Marketing of RailTel. RailTel has a PAN India MPLS Network and the TP runs over the network.

Strategic partnerships is a big step to scale skilling initiatives in India: Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy 

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) initiated a strategic partnership through a joint workshop with Wadhwani Foundation with the aim to catalyse skill development and entrepreneurship initiatives of Government of India. 

At the event, the Minister of State (I/C) Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that strategic partnerships with organisations that express deep interest to promote entrepreneurship and encourage skill development initiatives in India is a big step towards scaling skilling initiatives in India. He stated this cooperation has given us enough strength and support to carry forward the initiatives in this sector. The creation of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is a dream project of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, envisaging to bring under one umbrella skill development programmes currently spread across various Ministries and Departments. The outcome is to create more jobs such that people who are skilled and trained get employed and the demand of the demographic dividend of the country is satiated. 

Present at the event, Shri Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship stated that the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) of the foundation has created a strong network through 600 colleges, 4000 mentors and 3000 faculty members that continue to create and support emerging young entrepreneurs. The entire ecosystem of skilling is intricate and involves not just skilling but also re-skilling, up-skilling and multi-skilling. These are the real islands of excellence and need to be scaled up throughout the country. 

Present at the event Dr. Romesh Wadhwani, Founder and Chairman Wadhwani Foundation said Wadhwani Foundation is committed to help Government of India in its efforts on skilling and entrepreneurship leading to meaningful employment to millions of young Indians.
