The Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE), the apex organization in the country for the training of highway professionals, on behalf of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will organize a workshop cum exhibition on “Adoption of Innovative technologies and materials for Road Construction in India” on February 20-21, 2015. Briefing the mediapersons on the event, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Shri Vijay Chhibber said here today, “to encourage use of new/alternative materials/technologies, Ministry initiated the process of accreditation. However, new/alternative materials/technologies could not receive desired response from project engineers, designers and consultants. Therefore, pro-active steps for their adoption need to be encouraged.” The aim of the workshop-cum-exhibition is also to provide a platform to developers and promoters to showcase innovative materials and technologies with a view to encourage their adoption and use in the design, construction, maintenance, operation and management of road/bridge infrastructure in India. In order to encourage greater participation in the event, no fee is being charged from participants.

The Secretary said that “world-wide, many new/alternative materials/technologies have emerged, which hold promise for adoption in our country as well. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has, accordingly, been issuing guidelines for the usage of the new materials/technologies from time to time.” He added that the Manuals of `Standards and Specifications for 4/6 laning of National Highways through Public Private Partnership` also stipulate that the Concessionaires will be free to adopt international practices, alternative specifications, materials and standards to bring in innovation in the design and construction, provided they are better or comparable with the Indian standards.

He further added that the Ministry has issued guidelines that the new/alternative materials/technologies, proven in India or abroad, shall be deemed to be accredited for adoption in the highway sector. The developers/promoters of new/alternative materials/technologies shall have to provide the standards and specifications and certified performance reports from the user agencies of major developed countries where the proposed materials/techniques have been successfully used to the executing agency to establish their suitability for adoption. It is further envisaged that the developers/promoters shall strive to establish a permanent base in India and show a long-term commitment to the goal of innovative infrastructure development in India.
