The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of Shri Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer.


In a condolence message, the President has said, “It was with profound sorrow that I learnt of the passing away of Shri Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer.

As an eminent jurist, he used law as an instrument of social engineering and social change making justice accessible to all, including the marginalized and the vulnerable. He earned a reputation for his extraordinary knowledge of law. As a judge of the Supreme Court of India, he made immense contribution to the development of human rights jurisprudence. He will remain an inspiration for the members of legal fraternity.

His sad demise leaves a void which is difficult to fill. In his death, the nation has lost a great judicial statesman, whose long years in public service will be remembered for years to come”.

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has extended his greetings and felicitations to all members of the Indian Navy and their families on the occasion of Navy Day 2014.

In his message, the President has said, “I am happy to know that the Navy Day is being celebrated on December 4, 2014.

The current geostrategic environment has enhanced the role and responsibilities of the Indian Navy in protecting the nation’s maritime interests. The Navy’s successful induction of indigenously constructed warships and submarines and its integration of Indian-made equipment and systems symbolise India’s growing maritime capabilities and quest for strategic self-reliance. It is indeed a matter of great pride and reassurance to the entire nation that the uniformed and civilian personnel of the Navy have been serving the nation with utmost devotion and dedication. They have countered effectively growing challenges and maintained constant vigil at sea.

I am sure the Indian Navy will continue to ensure the security of maritime trade and international sea lanes vital for the nation’s development; protect our vast coastline and contribute to regional peace and stability.

On the occasion of Navy Day 2014, I extend my greetings and felicitations to all members of the Indian Navy and their families and wish them every success in their endeavours”.

In his message to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of the Kingdom of Thailand, the President has said, “On behalf of the Government, the people of India and on my own behalf, I extend warm greetings and felicitations to Your Majesty and to the people of Thailand on the occasion of your National Day.

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari has deeply condoled the passing away of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, an eminent jurist and former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, who was also a social reformer, an activist and a defender of public interest.



In his condolence message, he has said that Justice Iyer served as Judge of the Kerala High Court and the Supreme Court of India with great distinction. While on the bench he came to be widely recognised through his judgements as an avowed champion of human rights and civil liberties. In his departure, the nation has lost a worthy son who came to be respected by all for his unwavering commitment to upholding the Rule of Law.
