The Government has not scaled down the target for CIL for 2014-15 i.e. fixed at 507 million tonnes which is 9 percent more than the actual production during the previous year.  This was stated by Sh. Piyush Goyal, Minister of state for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy (Independent Charge) in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

The Minister further stated that the at present domestic production of coal from all sources is less than total domestic demand  from power as well as  other sectors. Therefore, the focus of the Government is on increasing production of Coal as far as possible by facilitating environment & forest clearances, pursuing with State Government for help in expediting land acquisition and coordinated effort with Railways for movement of coal. Steps have been taken by Coal India Ltd. and its subsidiaries to augment coal production which includes capacity addition from new projects and use of mass production technologies.

The Minister further stated that the Coal price of indigenous coal has been decontrolled w.e.f 01.01.2000. The CIL fixes the price of coal which is commonly known as notified prices. The price was last notified in June 2013. However,  the annualized increase of CIL coal price in the deregulated regime at about 6.6% has been lower than the corresponding increase in indices of AICPI at about 7.3% (during the period 2000-01 to 2013-14).  Regarding import, coal is placed under Open General License and can be freely imported at their contracted prices by anyone on payment of applicable import duty. The prices of imported coal are market driven as per the prevalent international price trend for coal.
