Indian underworld don captured in Bali

Indonesian authorities said they will deport an Indian fugitive shortly after arresting the alleged organized crime boss on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, known in India as “Chhota Rajan,'' was on the Interpol's most wanted list for two decades, said Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto.
Wiyanto said that Nikalje was arrested yesterday after arriving at Bali's airport from Sydney, based on a red notice from Interpol and following a tip from Australian authorities in Canberra.

He said police were questioning the gangster at police headquarter in Denpasar, the provincial capital, and coordinating with Indian diplomats for deportation.

He held an Indian passport when he arrived in Denpasar, about 968 kilometers east of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
Media in India have reported that Nikalje was wanted for being involved in several mafia killings and other major crimes.

“The information we have received is that the identification and verification of Chhota Rajan is going on,'' said India's Home Minister Rajnath Singh.—AP
