Indian expatriates are preparing for the first visit by an Indian premier in more than 30 years, after it was reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the UAE later this month.

The Indian Community Welfare Committee is organising a major event for Modi on the evening of August 17 at the Dubai Cricket Stadium Grounds.

In a statement the ICWC said it is making arrangements to transport large numbers of people from metro stations to the stadium to welcome Modi to Dubai.

Details of the event and a registration form are available at www. namoindubai.ae. The Indian government has yet to formally announce the visit.

The last Indian prime minister to visit the UAE was Indira Gandhi in 1981.
