The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi at the Re-Invest 2015: India’s thrust on Renewable Energy an effort to ensure universal energy access for our poor, in New Delhi on February 15, 2015. The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy, Shri Piyush Goyal, the Minister of State for Commerce & Industry (Independent Charge), Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman and the Cabinet Secretary, Shri Ajit Seth are also seen.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today described India`s thrust towards renewable energy production as an effort to ensure universal energy access for India`s poor. He was speaking at the inauguration of RE-Invest 2015, India`s first Renewable Energy Global Investors` Meet and Expo, in New Delhi.

Observing that India has now graduated from Megawatts to Gigawatts in terms of renewable energy production, the Prime Minister said that even today there are lakhs of families in the country that are deprived of energy connectivity. He said the fruits of development will not reach the common man until energy connectivity reaches every last household of the country. The Prime Minister asserted that in this age of globalization, we have no option but to make a quantum leap in energy production and connectivity.

The Prime Minister asserted that India`s stress on renewable energy is not aimed at impressing the world, but to meet our own people`s energy requirements.

The Prime Minister spoke of the "seven horses of energy." He said that so far, India has focused on thermal, gas hydro and nuclear power. But now we need to add Solar Energy, Wind Energy and Biogas Energy.

The Prime Minister said India is also working towards evolving a consortium of about 50 countries that are blessed with abundant solar radiation. This will aim to pool research and technological advancements in the field of solar energy, to improve its accessibility to the poorest of the poor, and in the remotest of locations.

Shri Narendra Modi suggested the possibility of hybrid energy parks harnessing solar and wind energy together in an area to maximize benefit. He also encouraged the installation of solar panels over water bodies to harness solar energy as well as minimize surface evaporation. He further spoke about the need for harnessing rooftop solar power. In the rural areas, he stressed on the need for solar pumps to reduce input costs for farmers. He further spoke about need for micro-irrigation to conserve water and enhance crop yield for farmers.

He welcomed initiatives by many state governments in this direction. This collective effort, he said, will truly take the country "from Megawatts to Gigawatts". He said that if any country has the potential to lead the world in the domain of renewable energy, it is India. The Prime Minister said that loving nature and living in harmony with nature is a part of India`s DNA. At the same time, he said, we cannot merely rely on our culture and traditions to carry us through, but sustained efforts are needed to make a quantum leap in this direction.

He called for sustained technological research in renewable energy; and a thrust on domestic equipment manufacturing for renewable energy as part of the "Make in India" initiative.

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Piyush Goyal, were present on the occasion.

Rural market complex proposal for Northeast submitted to Dr.Jitendra Singh

A delegation from East Khasi Hills led by two young journalists, Shri KhrawhoklangThabah and Shri RiningLyngdohMawphlang, today called on the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr.Jitendra Singh and submitted a proposal-cum-project report for construction of a “rural market complex” at Sohiong village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

Appreciating the effort undertaken in preparing the project report, Dr.Jitendra Singh said, “rural market complex” is a relatively new concept which could actually be applicable even in other parts of the country with similar topography and hilly terrain. For example, in the State of Jammu & Kashmir also, several remote rural areas in peripheral districts like Kishtwar and Doda could be benefited by such projects, he observed.

The proposal submitted to the Minister provides a detailed outline of the project envisaged to be brought up on a 10 acre land in HimaSohiong at a cost of Rs.10 crores. Once the project is complete, it could be a “dream come true” for backward and remote village people who will get in their midst a Market Complex catering to diverse needs of farmers, traders and consumers.

Dr.Jitendra Singh assured the deputation that he will ask the officers in his Ministry to further develop the project report, and, if need be, seek professional help for its further modification and improvement. An on-the -spot assessment of the proposed venue will also have to be undertaken,he added. As for the estimate of expenditure, he said, he will have to check whether it would be possible to include it in the upcoming budget which is already in the final stages of preparation in the Union Finance Ministry. Alternatively, it could be found out from which other source can the amount to be spared,he assured.

He said, the State Government of Meghalaya will also be taken on board and he will ask Secretary, North Eastern Council (NEC) to take up the matter with Chief Secretary of Meghalaya.

If the initiative proves successful, Dr.Jitendra Singh said, it could open a new chapter in providing comprehensive shopping complexes or malls in village areas, which would not only serve the local needs, but could, to a significant extent, also bring down the trend of migration of youth and other people from rural to urban areas.
